My friends teamed up together to participate in a World Jam for VRChat, the virtual reality platform known for its social experiences.
VRChat is a hub for thousands of games made with its platform, which it calls "worlds". The theme for this World Jam was "Space Jam".
The goal of this Space Jam was to "create a VR experience that pushes the boundaries of virtual reality to depict the future of human life and work in space."
My group decided to showcase the current research and technology that has been studied and proposed to colonize Venus.
My role on the team was to be the programmer, mainly. I developed a system in Unity that allowed the player to approach a floating question mark, and then it would display some fun facts about Venus.
I also developed a minigame, where the player could explore our environment and collect science samples; then, once inserted in a certain place, would display information about the sample.
Besides also some general level design work that I did, I was also the main person that actually did all of the research necessary. While it was a handful of papers that I read that inspired our theme in the first
place, I also reached out to Dr.Geoffrey Landis, known for his research papers on Venus, and got a reply from him with a lot of pointers and excellent information.
We did not end up winning the World Jam, but we did get some very good reception. As of writing, the world has 37,000+ visits.
Below is some photos from the world, as well as a link to the world to visit it in VRChat if you know how to use it.
